Consumer Statement - Use of Cookies

Burst Media Corporation is an advertising network that delivers online ads to anonymous internet audiences on high-quality, independent online web publishing content. Burst Media respects the right of all internet users to privacy. Consequently, we have developed this statement to detail the ways in which our advertising networks uses cookies.

What is a cookie and where does it come from?

A cookie is a small text file that is stored on your computer for the purpose of identifying your web browser to a website or network. Cookies are placed on your computer when you visit or register with certain websites. Cookies help to enable certain functions on websites, such as shopping carts, login-based sessions, and advertising. A cookie file is extremely small, usually less than 1kb in size.

Cookies are not software and thus cannot install adware or spyware onto your computer or make it more susceptible to viruses.

Why does Burst Media use cookies?

Burst may use cookies to improve your Web browsing experience, and to help better target ads. When you are first served a Burst ad, Burst may assign a unique random number to your computer browser - commonly known as a "cookie." We do this to understand the way a user responds to the ads we deliver. For example, this number lets us keep track of how many times you view an ad we distribute. Likewise, the cookie can help make sure you do not see the same ad over and over - thus enhancing your online Web viewing experience.

We cannot and do not use our cookies to obtain any personally identifiable information. We do not link the information we store in cookies to any personally identifiable information you submit while on our sites. Most Web browsers automatically accept cookies, but you can usually change your browser to prevent that use if you desire.

Burst Media will never use cookies to:

  • Alter your internet experience, other than to show you a targeted display ad on sites within our Network
  • Collect personally identifiable information such as your name and address, phone number, email address, social security number, credit card number, and so forth

How does Burst Media set cookies?

A Burst Media cookie is placed into your internet browser's cache folder when you visit a website that is a member of the Burst Media Network. That cookie is represented by the name burstnet.com

What does a Burst Media cookie look like on my computer?

This is what a Burst Media cookie might look like in the cache file of your internet browser:

Name = TID
ID = 00g3iga14p0oku
Domain = burstnet.com

How long does Burst Media retain users' cookie data?

Burst Media currently collects non personally identifiable information such as advertisements viewed/clicked, IP Address, Urls of web pages visited, Anonymous User IDs, time of day as well as cookie Data that could represent activities that have been performed in the past. This information is collected via our technology and stored for up to 2 years for the purpose of: 1) analyzing campaign results, 2) ensuring that our technology is functioning properly, and 3) preventing fraud across our sites.

How can I opt out of the Burst Media cookie?

In an effort to respect your privacy, Burst Media gives all internet users the choice to opt-out of receiving Burst Media cookies. If you opt out, your web browser will be associated with a generic "opt-out" cookie, which will prevent us from associating any non-personally identifiable information with your browser. Burst's "opt-out" cookie has a two year expiration date. Keep in mind that participating in our opt-out program does not prevent you from seeing ads served by Burst Media; instead, the ads we serve to you will not be targeted to you based on your web surfing experiences.

If you would like to opt out, please visit our Cookie Opt-out Program. Alternatively, you may also choose to opt out of the Burst Media Network through the Network Advertising Initiative's Consumer Opt-Out Program.

As described above, Burst Media's Opt-out Program is cookie-based, so you may need to opt out again (and set a new "opt-out" cookie) if you do any of the following:

  • Delete your cookies
  • Block cookies, including third party cookies
  • Switch internet browsers
  • Change computers
  • Upgrade your web browser
